Details

My maritime training started when working as a young man (from age 15) on the M/V Agnes (500 tons at first, the next one 800 tons). My father was captain and owner of these ships, as well as an excellent mentor. Over time he and his crew provided me with a very thorough education in professional seamanship and all aspects of operating a commercial vessel.

Skills I acquired included maintenance, rope work, loading and unloading operations, navigation, pilotage, maneuvering, operating radar, radio and other navigational aids and extensive watchkeeping in busy waters. On the technical side I gained experience from working with main engines, auxiliary engines, winches, generators and pump systems. This enabled me to take charge of engine watches as well.

Sailing Background

My sailing experience has had a lot of influence from growing up in a maritime family. My father was captain and owner of a cargo ship, my grandfather a pilot, my uncle a Chief Engineer. I had my first dinghy at age 7, was confidently handling small outboard and diesel-powered boats at age 9 and developed as a professional sailor on commercial ships from age 15. Later in life I skippered my own 12.5 metre (41 ft), 16 ton classic ex pilot vessel for several years.

In more recent times I have had the pleasure of working closely with several highly experienced captains. This has given me valuable skills and practice in handling large yachts and running them to the high level of standards expected by owners and guests.

I have sailed the North Sea, English Channel, Irish Sea and Atlantic Ocean, mostly in a capacity of Chief Mate, including a transatlantic crossing. I also know my way about the Norwegian coast, as well as estuaries and sea ports in The Netherlands and Belgium. I am comfortable with demanding weather, tidal conditions and currents.

Since my early days at sea I have confirmed my maritime skills by aquiring a Yachtmaster Offshore certificate, passing the Deck Officer Class 5 (Master 500 tons) exams and receiving other formal qualifications as shown on my Skills and Qualifications page.
